Why Airless?

Airless tire technology effectively eliminates the need to periodically refill the tires with air, flat tires, and the need to carry a spare. Non-pneumatic tires are also environmentally friendly; Not only can their deformation be engineered to reduce energy loss and extra emissions, but the wheels themselves can be made from recycled materials and be recycled at the end of their life cycle.

air0’s unique smaller diameter rim fits inside the tighter barrel of non-pneumatic tires while retaining a recognizable profile on the wheel's outward face. The shape is sturdy and not overly complex, allowing it to be manufactured at a reasonable cost, even if cast of quality alloys or forged of high grade aluminum. air0 was modeled based on Mercedes S-Class fitment and dimensions, but the form can be resized and adapted onto a variety of vehicle makes and models.

The wheel’s two-part design consists of a flat back plate and an oversized wheel face and barrel. The back plate of the wheel secures onto the rear of the barrel with 10 individual 0.5” bolts. When bolted together, the front and back pieces lock around the wheel’s inner barrel, with the oversized face covering much of the open area on the wheel for aerodynamic and aesthetic purposes. The inner sides of the pieces are shaped to mirror the curvature of the airless tire.

The simple clean shape of air0 provides MOMO and the consumer with areas of extensive customization. By altering the processing of the cast or forged wheels, the metal can be given different hues and finishes, while changes in panel material and color make the wheel a prominent aesthetic piece that helps the futuristic non-pneumatic tire to compliment the user’s prized vehicle.

There is also an opportunity for MOMO to move into the airless tire manufacturing market. MOMO could ensure a perfect fit and quality control, as well as more easily sell air0 wheels by offering tires of custom strength, deformability, color, and size to pair with the set of rims.

The Air0 wheel is the result of a semester of research into the question: What does the future of the wheel look like?

With a durable base wheel that can be customized to any car's fitment and a unique non-pneumatic tire, Air0 improves fuel efficiency and eliminates the costly and frustrating issue of flat tires and punctures. The design is intended to help introduce airless tires into the consumer car market by improving on the weak aesthetic of airless designs and adding aesthetic customization, as well as resolving compatibility issues with current car models.
